Spade-grip drills have a pistol grip plus additional handles for two-handed use to provide maximum control and pressure application. The pistol grip positions the user's main hand behind the bit-holding chuck to keep the tool steady. It has a trigger switch that is pressed to activate the drill. The user's other hand can grip the spade- or D-shaped handle at the back of the drill body to apply extra force or can grip the cylindrical handle on the side of the drill body to increase stability and control. Sometimes called spade-handle drills, they're typically used with wide, long bits (paddles) to bore large holes in timber, to mix mud or plaster, and to create holes when a standard pistol-grip drill is inadequate.
