Open end wrenches use their fixed, U-shaped opening to make contact with two sides of a fastener to turn it. They access fasteners from the top or side and slide their head into spaces where box wrenches won't fit.

These double open-end wrenches have a head at each end that grips and turns SAE (inch) fasteners of a specific size. They allow access to fasteners from the top and side compared to box wrenches that can only access a fastener from the top. Wrenches with two head sizes have a different size on each end to fit a different-sized fastener. Wrenches with two opening angles have a different head angle on each end that provides clearance around obstacles.

These speed-style wrenches have a wrench head on each end that allows tightening and loosening of fasteners without having to reposition the wrench after each turn, and without the need for a ratcheting gear mechanism in the wrench end. Speed-style wrenches allow access to fasteners from the top and side compared to box wrenches that can only access a fastener from the top. These double end wrenches are SAE (inch) size and can have a different size on each end so that each wrench can be used for two different size fasteners.
