Slide hammer pullers repeatedly thrust a weight along a slide bar to pull bearings, gears, pulleys, hubs, and other components from shafts or housings. Also known as slide knockers, their jolting action unseats rusted-on or wedged-in parts that would be difficult to remove with the more uniform pulling force of jaw pullers or push-pullers. Their slide bar threads onto puller jaws or other attachments that grip the part during the pull.

Slide hammer jaw pullers consist of a claw that grips onto the parts being pulled and a slide bar with a weight that slams back along the bar to create the pulling force for removing the parts. Their jaws should have enough reach to grip the base of the part being pulled and enough spread to accommodate the width of the part. Heavier hammer weights generate more impact energy to increase pulling force.
