Retaining-Ring Pliers & Sets

Retaining-ring pliers install and remove snap rings that fit into a bore or onto a shaft and hold components in place. Also known as circlip pliers, their tips provide a firm grip on the rings to prevent them from flying off. Each pair of pliers adjusts its jaws to accommodate rings within a set diameter range. Retaining-ring pliers are commonly used to place rings on actuators, gear assemblies, motor shafts, and other machinery.

External Retaining-Ring Pliers
These retaining-ring pliers apply external rings onto shafts. Also known as outer snap ring pliers, they provide greater strength for more squeezing force than convertible pliers. Their tips slide into matching grip holes in a ring's lugs (ears) for a secure hold when pulling apart the ends of the ring.

Convertible Retaining-Ring Pliers
Convertible retaining-ring pliers switch their jaw motion or orientation to accommodate internal snap rings for bores and external snap rings for shafts. They eliminate the need for separate pairs of internal and external pliers. Their tips slide into matching grip holes in a ring's lugs (ears) for a secure hold when squeezing together or pulling apart the ends of the ring.
