Head Material

Brass strikes more softly than bronze, nickel aluminum bronze (NAB), and steel but harder than copper and other softer metals.
Copper prevents marring of soft steels in applications where brass, bronze, nickel aluminum bronze (NAB), and steel would strike too hard.
Lead Alloy produces the softest blow of all metal head materials, striking almost like a dead-blow hammer to reduce bounce back and minimize damage to surfaces.
Bronze is softer than nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) and steel but harder than brass and other softer metals. It reduces the risk of dents and dings on surfaces that NAB or steel would damage.
Nickel Aluminum Bronze (NAB) strikes more softly than soft steel and standard steel but provides excellent corrosion resistance for marine applications, chemical plants, and other corrosive environments.
Rubber is softer than plastic and metal but harder than wood. It minimizes damage to surfaces but can be more difficult to control than other head materials since it's prone to bouncing back when delivering strong blows.
Rawhide provides a soft touch that won't mar aluminum, brass, and other soft sheet metals. It's softer than metal but harder than wood and rubber.
Plastic strikes a focused blow for hard and soft metal, wood, plastic, and leather. It is softer than metal but harder than wood and rubber.
Wood delivers a controlled blow to strike wood- or plastic-handle chisels, set dowel and pins, and form sheet metal. It hits more softly than other head materials to minimize damage to surfaces.
Zinc is softer than other metals except lead alloy. It minimizes damage and marring on low-carbon steels, cast iron, aluminum plate, and other soft metals.

Handle Material

Fiberglass reduces vibration to lessen user fatigue and tightly holds the head to prevent it from flying off. Fiberglass weighs less than steel and produces less recoil but isn't as strong. It typically lasts longer than wood but may get brittle with extended UV exposure.
Wood absorbs blows to prevent user fatigue during extended use and provides an even weight balance with the head for a smoother swing than fiberglass or metal handles. It requires regular inspection for cracks, rot, and looseness where the handle meets the head.
Steel delivers the full force of the blow and won't crack, rot, or get brittle. It doesn't absorb recoil like non-metal handles, so it's typically covered with a thick grip that dampens vibration to prevent user fatigue.
Aluminum produces more force than non-metal handles and is lighter than steel but not as strong. The handle locks into the head with a metal insert. It doesn't absorb recoil like non-metal handles, so it typically contains a vibration-reduction mechanism.

Grip Style

They are soft faced but have a solid head material without interchangeable faces like split-head hammers. Their double-faced head provides balance for a controlled strike and is made of soft materials that cushion the blow and absorb vibration. Wooden heads strike the most softly, followed by rubber, rawhide, plastic, lead alloy, zinc, copper, brass, bronze, and nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB).
