Rectangular has two flat faces for a wide area of contact to abrade material from level surfaces and linear edges.
Square abrades material in corners and square or rectangular slots, grooves, and keyways.
Triangular abrades material in tight corners and angles less than 90°, creates V-grooves with 60° angles, and starts the process of squaring round holes before switching to a square file.
Round smooths or enlarges holes, abrades material from concave surfaces, shaves bevels on curved edges, rounds off circular workpieces, and cuts or finishes keyholes.
Half Round has a flat face to abrade material from level surfaces and a round face to abrade material from rounded grooves, holes, and edges.
Knife has thin edges to abrade material in corners, narrow slots, and tight angles.
Barrette tapers in width and thickness to access tight spaces and debur or smooth keyways, slots, gear teeth, and internal angles of workpieces.
Equaling cuts on all sides to shape and finish all surfaces of slots and corners. It's the same width and thickness from heel to point to produce uniform filing anywhere along the faces and edges.
Pillar is a narrow rectangle that tapers in thickness for intricate smoothing and finishing work. It also follows up after a square file to perform the finishing step when turning round holes into square holes.
Crossing has two round faces (each with a different radius) to abrade material from rounded grooves, holes, and edges. Also known as a cross file, it tapers in width and thickness to access tight curves.
Slitting has a diamond shape with two obtuse edges to cut wide grooves or smooth wide angles and two acute edges to cut narrow grooves or debur tight angles.
