These Swiss-pattern files make smoother cuts, remove material more gradually, and are made to more exacting dimensional standards than American-pattern files.

Pillar files are rectangular like flat files but narrower and tapering in thickness for more intricate smoothing and finishing work. They also follow up after square files to perform the finishing step when turning round holes into square holes. Their safe (toothless) edges prevent marring of adjacent surfaces when filing in corners and square slots.
