File handles and holders add a grip that is more comfortable and provides better control than holding the tang or body directly. They reduce the risk of injuries by setting hands at a distance from the cutting teeth and by covering the tang to prevent it from stabbing into the palm of the hand. These handles and holders typically outlast the files themselves and can be switched to a new file when the old one wears out.

Push-On Handles
Push-on handles press onto the tang of a compatible file and wedge tightly into place. Also known as ferruled handles, they are harder to remove than threaded-insert handles but less likely to rattle or dislodge.

Threaded-Insert Handles
Threaded-insert handles twist onto a compatible file tang. Also known as screw-on handles, they apply clamping pressure to the tang to hold it in place. They are easier to remove and switch between files than push-on handles.
