Phase

Single motors have a lower starting torque. They draw less electricity and are less energy-efficient than three-phase motors. All low-horsepower pump motors are single-phase.
Three motors have a higher starting torque and are more energy efficient with a higher power factor than single-phase motors.

Pump Housing Material

Cast Iron is more cost-effective but less corrosion-resistant than stainless steel, bronze, and aluminum.
Bronze offers more corrosion resistance than cast iron while being more cost-effective than stainless steel. If they are NSF-certified, these pumps can be used for potable water applications.

Motor Type

Capacitor-Start motors are single-phase and use a capacitor to provide the additional power needed to start the motor in high-torque scenarios. These motors usually have an externally accessible capacitor cover and a wiring junction box to allow for installation and maintenance of the motor.
Capacitor-Start/Run are single-phase and use two capacitors to start and run. One capacitor is designed to overcome the starting power requirements and initiate motor rotation. The other capacitor is designed to help smooth out power draw in medium-to-high demand scenarios. These motors usually have two capacitor covers and a wiring junction box to allow for installation and maintenance of the motor.
3-Phase motors are designed to start and operate without the aid of a start or run capacitor. They are able to generate high torque and efficiency by using three-phase power.

Motor Enclosure

Open Dripproof (ODP) has openings in the housing. These openings allow air to enter the enclosure and naturally cool the motor during operation and are suitable for environments free of dust and dirt. Open Dripproof (ODP) motor enclosures are more cost-effective than Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) Motor Enclosures.
Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) motor enclosures do not have openings in the housing. These enclosure types contain a fan inside the housing to cool the motor during operations. Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) motor enclosures are suited for environments with dust, dirt, or other contaminants.
