Grooving tools are used with lathes to cut channels on the end of a workpiece (face grooving) or into an existing bore (internal grooving). They are used for applications such as creating recesses for retaining rings and necking workpieces to ensure a clean fit when mating parts. They have a cutting edge at one or both ends of the tool and are held stationary on the lathe while the workpiece is rotated against their cutting edge.
