Shrink-Fit Toolholders & Adapters

Shrink-fit toolholders and adapters use thermal contraction rather than mechanical tightening to get a strong, uniform grip on cutting tools. They are used in demanding, high-speed applications to provide more gripping force, better balance, and higher concentricity than collets, milling chucks, or hydraulic chucks. This allows tools to produce better finishes and more accurate cuts. Shrink-fit toolholders have a bore that's slightly undersized compared to the shank diameter of a compatible cutting tool. They are made of heat-responsive metals that withstand rapid heating and cooling. The toolholders are heated by an induction heater or shrink-fit machine to expand the metal so cutting tools can be installed or removed. The toolholders are then allowed to cool, which shrink fits the tool onto the toolholder.
