Spiral-Flute STI Taps

Spiral-flute STI (screw-thread insert) taps pull chips out and away from the hole as the tap moves into the hole to create threads, which helps prevent chips from packing in the hole. They are used for creating oversized internal threads in blind holes so a helical-coil screw thread insert can be inserted in the hole. The insert distributes the load across the length of the threads and improves the threads' strength when a fastener with a standard screw thread size is installed in the hole.

The black-oxide finish on these taps retains lubricants to improve the taps' wear resistance and chip flow. Black-oxide taps should only be used on ferrous metals. High-speed steel taps provide good wear resistance in general purpose tapping applications in a range of materials.
