Spiral-Flute STI Taps

Available6 products
Spiral-flute STI (screw-thread insert) taps pull chips out and away from the hole as the tap moves into the hole to create threads, which helps prevent chips from packing in the hole. They are used for creating oversized internal threads in blind holes so a helical-coil screw thread insert can be inserted in the hole. The insert distributes the load across the length of the threads and improves the threads' strength when a fastener with a standard screw thread size is installed in the hole.

Bright Finish High-Speed Steel Spiral-Flute STI Taps

Bright Finish High-Speed Steel Spiral-Flute STI Taps
The bright finish on these taps provides a smooth, polished surface. High-speed steel taps provide good wear resistance in general purpose tapping applications in a range of materials.

TiCN-Coated Powdered-Metal Spiral-Flute STI Taps

TiCN-Coated Powdered-Metal Spiral-Flute STI Taps
The TiCN coating on these taps protects them from wear and is harder and more wear-resistant than a TiN coating. These taps are made from powdered metal, which has a uniform microstructure and grain distribution that gives the material a similar strength as carbide. Powdered-metal taps are tougher and less likely to break than cobalt and high-speed steel taps. They are used for tapping highly abrasive materials such as high-silicon aluminum.

Black-Oxide Cobalt Spiral-Flute STI Taps

Black-Oxide Cobalt Spiral-Flute STI Taps
The black-oxide finish on these taps retains lubricants to improve the taps' wear resistance and chip flow. Black-oxide taps should only be used on ferrous metals. Cobalt taps are harder and provide more wear resistance when tapping hard materials at high speeds than high-speed steel taps.
