Layout & Spring Calipers & Dividers

Available45 products
Layout and spring calipers use two adjustable legs to measure hard-to-measure dimensions or long distances. Calipers with legs extending outward are for inside measurements and calipers with legs that are pointed inward are for outside measurements. These legs are adjusted to the feature being measured, and the distance between the legs is checked with a ruler or other measuring tool. Dividers are used as scribing compasses and have two legs with sharpened points for marking arcs or circles on the surface of a workpiece. One leg of the divider sits in a dimple created in the workpiece surface, while the other leg turns around that leg and presses against the material to create a mark. These tools are most frequently used in metalworking and drafting applications.

Outside Spring & Firm Joint Calipers

Outside Spring & Firm Joint Calipers
These outside spring and firm joint calipers are used for taking indirect measurements. They are adjusted until their legs make contact with an external diameter, groove, or other feature and locked in place. Then the distance between the legs is measured with a ruler or high-precision gauge. These calipers are commonly used in metalworking, machining, and woodworking applications.

Layout & Scribing Compasses & Dividers

Layout & Scribing Compasses & Dividers
Spring- and firm-joint dividers, also known as compasses, have two straight and adjustable legs with solid scriber points on the ends. They are used for taking indirect measurements and making markings in blacksmithing, metalworking, and woodworking applications. They are also used where layout and marking is done by hand rather than with machinery.

Inside Spring & Firm Joint Calipers

Inside Spring & Firm Joint Calipers
Inside spring and firm joint calipers have two symmetrical legs that come together at a joint to form a jaw. The jaws are adjusted and the outward-facing contact points on the ends of the legs and the distance between the contact points is measured. They are commonly used to take indirect inside measurements in metalworking, machining, and woodworking applications.

Hermaphrodite Calipers

Hermaphrodite Calipers
Hermaphrodite calipers, also known as odd-leg or jenny calipers, have different style legs that meet at a firm joint nut. One leg is solid with an inward-facing contact point, while the other leg is shorter and mounts to an adjustable scriber point to mark off a constant distance from an edge. These calipers are also used to locate the center of a round or square section of steel.
