Digital and dial caliper gauges have spring-loaded arms fixed to a dial or digital indicator that measures absolute or incremental inside or outside dimensions. On the end of each arm, they have inward- or outward-facing contact points that provide a measurement reading on the dial or digital indicator. These gauges operate over a short measurement range and are actuated with a lever or button so they can be used with one hand only. They can also be used as a thickness or snap gauge. They are commonly used for taking quick readings of inside and outside dimensions where a caliper or micrometer is not necessary.
