Carbide-tipped screw-machine length drill bits have carbide cutting edges that provide excellent hardness, wear resistance, and heat resistance and retain their hardness better than high-speed steel or cobalt cutting edges. The bits' bodies are made from a material that absorbs more vibration and shock than carbide, so they are less rigid and less likely to break than solid carbide drill bits. Screw-machine length drill bits are shorter than jobber length and maintenance length drill bits of the same size.
