NSF Rating

This rating is based on standards set by the National Sanitation Foundation to certify the lubricant's safety levels for use around food processing.

H1 Food Grade indicates the lubricant can be used in and around food processing areas where incidental contact may occur and does not pose a health risk if consumed in diminutive amounts.
H2 No Food Contact indicates the lubricant is intended for machinery and equipment that is used in areas with no possibility of direct contact with food.
H3 Food Grade indicates the lubricant is intended for equipment that comes into direct contact with food and is safe for human consumption.

Properties

The specific properties of the lubricant.

Dielectric insulates sensitive electrical components against conductivity to protect against galvanic corrosion.
Extended Life also referred to as EL, performs twice as long than standard lubricants for high-demand applications where there's a need to extend the time between lubricant changes.
Extreme Pressure also referred to as EP, maintains a lubricating layer between surfaces in highly pressurized conditions where standard lubricants degrade and squeeze out.
High Temperature maintains lubricating performance and will not drip or degrade when exposed to high heat.
Low Temperature maintains lubricating performance under freezing conditions as well as contact with ice, road salt, and humidity.
Rust and Oxidation Resistant prevents rust, oxidation, and deposit formation to protect internal machine components and extend their operating life.
Water Resistant inhibits corrosion and rust while maintaining lubricating performance in conditions with prolonged exposure to water.

Zinc-Free

Zinc-free (ash-free) oils are biodegradable to minimize their impact on the environment. They are compatible with steel or copper alloys and are often used in marine and mobile equipment operating in environmentally sensitive areas.

Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant

Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) must meet the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that require lubricants to be inherently biodegradable, minimally toxic, and nonbioaccumulative.

Base Oil

The primary oil in the lubricant's formula that offers unique properties.

Mineral is a standard base oil that is naturally-occurring.
Semi-Synthetic is a mixture of mineral oil and chemically-engineered oil that offers higher heat resistance than mineral oil alone.
Silicone is a manufactured oil that repels moisture and is suitable for sensitive surfaces such as electronics.
Synthetic is a chemically-engineered oil with more uniformity and a higher resistance to heat than other base oils.
Vegetable is a bio-based oil derived from plants that is biodegradable and more environmentally sensitive than other oils.

ISO Viscosity Grade

ISO viscosity grade is defined by the International Standardization Organization (ISO). The ISO rates the oil's viscosity which is its resistance to flow (thickness) at 104°F (40°C). The thicker the oil, the slower the flow rate, and the higher the grade.

SAE Viscosity Grade

SAE grade is defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers to rate oil viscosity which is the oil's resistance to flow. Thinner oils have a lower rating and perform better at low temperatures while thicker oils have a higher rating and perform better at high temperatures. A rating with a "W" (for winter) is the oil's performance rating at low temperatures.

Flash Point

Flash point is based on the ASTM D92 standard that determines the flammability of the lubricant and identifies the minimum temperature at which the lubricant forms an ignitable vapor.

Pour Point

The pour point is the lowest temperature at which the lubricant can still flow with gravity, and indicates a lubricant's resistance to cold temperatures. Based on the ASTM D97-96a test method, the pour point is 5°F above the temperature at which the lubricant shows no movement when held upside down for 5 seconds.
