The paper or sample turns color and is matched to a chart to determine the pH reading. pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14, where seven is considered neutral. Numbers below seven are considered acidic, and numbers above seven are considered alkaline. pH testing is used in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and labs to ensure test samples are within acceptable ranges.
