Standard forward-curved blowers, also called squirrel cage fans, feature many blower wheel blades that are angled toward the direction of rotation. This design allows them to run quietly while moving large volumes of air in clean-air applications. This makes them best suited for moving clean air against lower static pressures such as in air curtains, heaters, and as OEM parts in finished goods.

These blowers are used in environments that are both corrosive and contain potentially explosive vapors or dust in the air. Their motors are sealed and rated to operate in these types of environments and the blower wheel is mounted directly onto the motor shaft. This reduces friction and improves efficiency when compared to a belt-drive fan. Direct-drive fans have fewer moving parts and typically require less maintenance than belt-drive fans.
