Standard forward-curved blowers, also called squirrel cage fans, feature many blower wheel blades that are angled toward the direction of rotation. This design allows them to run quietly while moving large volumes of air in clean-air applications. This makes them best suited for moving clean air against lower static pressures such as in air curtains, heaters, and as OEM parts in finished goods.

Crossflow direct-drive blowers fit into long, narrow spaces and provide a steady flow of air across their entire length. Intake air is drawn in from the area around the blower wheel and pushed into an exhaust guide rather than moving through a fan scroll housing. This design reduces the chance of intake blockages which helps to ensure continuous operation in environments where cleaning or maintenance may be infrequent. They are commonly used in air curtains, electric fireplaces, and electronic cooling applications.
