These low-voltage thermostat controls provide remote monitoring and temperature control by communicating with building automation systems, which regulate various components within a building's structure, including HVAC, electrical, lighting, and plumbing. Also known as communicating controls or networked controls, these thermostats control common HVAC equipment such as packaged rooftop units, air handlers, fan coil units, and heat pumps. These thermostat controls are energy efficient, as they adjust the temperature according to a series of programmed settings that take effect at different times of the day or days of the week. They also provide multidevice control, so all thermostats across a building can be controlled at once instead of individually.

BACnet MS/TP is a network protocol that allows multiple devices to communicate across building automation systems using a system of tokens that passes signals from one device to another.
