Flame sensors install into combusting heating systems, detect the presence of flames, and send a signal that the ignition control system uses to regulate the combustion process. Some units have contacts that switch when exposed to flame, while others provide the raw signal for the control to interpret.

Mercury Flame Sensors
Mercury flame sensors detect the presence of flames and activate a connected relay in response. As the flame heats the sensor, the mercury expands and switches a connected relay. This allows them to control higher voltages and currents than other flame sensor types.
