Compressors in air conditioners and refrigerators circulate refrigerant through a system to draw out heat and produce cool air. These compressors replace old or faulty units that run continuously and may overheat the motor because they can no longer keep refrigerant under pressure. Crankcase heaters prevent refrigerant from slugging and causing damage to a compressor that needs to operate in temperatures lower than the system's evaporator temperature.
