They're also used to supplement a central system for room-specific heating and cooling.

These single-zone mini-split systems include a condenser along with a concealed ceiling-mount air handler that can connect directly to a register or to ductwork for delivering air to different parts of a room. When ducted, they distribute air more evenly than a ductless installation to eliminate hot or cold spots. The air handler installs in ceilings, furr downs, or soffits to stay out of view for a finished look within a room. The condenser can either be roof-mounted or placed on the ground outside a wall.
