External Retaining Rings

Available1,091 products
External retaining rings, also called snap rings or circlips, fit into grooves cut into shafts to help retain components and keep the shaft inside the assembly. They are removable and reusable for easy maintenance and repair on high-wear components. Some rings feature wings or fingers on their inner surface to provide additional grip on the shaft.

Standard External Rings

Standard External Rings

Standard external rings, sometimes called circlips or Seeger rings, fit into grooves milled into a shaft to help retain components within an assembly. They install using specialized tools that expand the ring and allow it to be slid into the groove on the shaft.

E-Style Rings

E-Style Rings

E-style rings, also known as E-rings or E-clips, have three prongs or fingers that snap into grooves on small diameter shafts to hold them in place, effectively retaining components and preventing parts from sliding out of the assembly. They feature wide shoulders with a larger opening than other ring types, allowing for higher thrust loads and installation from the side of the shaft rather than being slid along the shaft and into place.

Poodle-Style Rings

Poodle-Style Rings
Poodle-style rings, also called poodle clips, are heavy-duty retaining rings that are thicker than standard retaining rings and feature larger shoulders. This design provides a bigger retention area that withstands greater loads than standard retaining rings.

Spiral Rings

Spiral Rings
Spiral rings install into grooves on a rod or shaft to secure components in place. They feature a spiral-shaped design, similar to a key ring, which allows for expansion or contraction and easy installation without the need for tools.

Self-Locking Rings

Self-Locking Rings
Self-locking rings, also called push-on rings, slide over a rod or shaft and secure into place using a ring of internal wings or fingers that bite into the shaft. They do not need grooves like standard retaining rings but have reduced holding power which limits them to light-duty applications.

Crescent Rings

Crescent Rings

Crescent rings, also called C-clips, feature a low-profile design that allows them to be used where clearance is limited. Their lack of teeth and shoulder height reduces their profile but also reduces their load capacity, compared to standard retaining rings.

X-Rings

X-Rings
X-rings, also called X-retaining fasteners, slip onto the grooves of a rod or shaft to retain parts in place. They secure into place by squeezing their legs together using pliers. While they can be removed, their design does not allow for reinstallation, unlike other types of retaining rings.

Retaining Caps

Retaining Caps
Retaining caps press-fit onto the ends of shafts and studs to provide visually appealing retention. They feature a decorative plastic or metal cap with a circular retaining ring with fingers that bite into the rod to secure it in place.

External Ring Assortments

External Ring Assortments
External ring assortments contain sets of various sizes of retaining rings. They are ideal for high-volume environments where the same rings are used repeatedly, such as repair shops and production areas.

Retaining Ring Tools

Retaining Ring Tools
Retaining ring tools hook into holes in retaining rings and expand or compress them to help with installation.
