Standard lynch pins secure themselves in place on an axle or shaft with an integrated, spring-loaded ring. This ring connects to the head of the pin and snaps into place around the mounting shaft after the pin is fully inserted.

Lynch pins with chains are similar to standard lynch pins with the addition of a captive cotter pin that connects to the pin with a chain.
