Hazardous Location Specification

Class I, Div 1, Group B, C, D are for hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present during normal operations. Class I hazards are commonly found in petroleum refineries, fuel dispensaries, sewage treatment plants, and processes using chemicals, paints, coatings, or sealants. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group B (hydrogen, butadiene, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and acrolein), Group C (ethylene, cyclopropane, and ethyl ether), and Group D (acetone, ammonia, benzene, butane, ethanol, gasoline, hexane, methane, methanol, naphtha, natural gas, propane, and toluene).
Class I, Div 2, Group A, B, C, D are for hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be normally confined or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class I hazards are commonly found in petroleum refineries, fuel dispensaries, sewage treatment plants, and processes using chemicals, paints, coatings, or sealants. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group A (acetylene), Group B (hydrogen, butadiene, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and acrolein), Group C (ethylene, cyclopropane, and ethyl ether), and Group D (acetone, ammonia, benzene, butane, ethanol, gasoline, hexane, methane, methanol, naphtha, natural gas, propane, and toluene).
Class II, Div 1, Group E, F, G are for hazardous locations where combustible dust is present during normal operations. Class II hazards are commonly found in pharmaceutical factories, coal-handling plants, grain elevators, and plants processing flour, feed, or powder. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group E combustible dust (aluminum, commercial alloys, and magnesium), Group F combustible dust (carbon black, charcoal, coal, and coke dust), and Group G combustible dust (chemicals, flour, grain, plastic, and wood).
Not Rated identifies that the electrical device has not been tested for use in hazardous locations.

6 is a safety rating for indoor and outdoor electrical enclosures – also known as submersible enclosures – that specifies a degree of protection against incidental contact, against the entry of solid objects (falling dirt) or water (sprays and occasional submersion at a limited depth), and against exterior ice formation.
12 is a safety rating for indoor electrical enclosures that specifies a degree of protection against incidental contact and the entry of solid objects (falling dirt, circulating dust/lint) or water (dripping, light splashing).
13 is a safety rating for indoor electrical enclosures – often called oil-proof or oil-tight – that specifies a degree of protection against incidental contact and against the entry of solid objects (falling dirt, circulating dust), water (drips, light splashes), and oil or noncorrosive coolants (sprays, splashes, seepage).
