NEC 500 Hazardous Location Classifications

Class I, Division 1 & 2, Groups B, C, D are for hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present during normal operations, are normally confined, or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class I hazards are commonly found in petroleum refineries, fuel dispensaries, sewage treatment plants, and processes using chemicals, paints, coatings, or sealants. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group B (hydrogen, butadiene, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and acrolein), Group C (ethylene, cyclopropane, and ethyl ether), Group D (acetone, ammonia, benzene, butane, ethanol, gasoline, hexane, methane, methanol, naphtha, natural gas, propane, and toluene).
Class I, Division 2, Groups B, C, D are for hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors are normally confined or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class II hazards are commonly found in pharmaceutical factories, coal-handling plants, grain elevators, and plants processing flour, feed, or powder. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group E combustible dust (aluminum, commercial alloys, and magnesium), Group F combustible dust (carbon black, charcoal, coal, and coke dust) and Group G combustible dust (chemicals, flour, grain, plastic, and wood).
Class II, Division 1 & 2, Groups F, G are for hazardous locations where combustible dust is present during normal operations, normally confined, or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class II hazards are commonly found in pharmaceutical factories, coal-handling plants, grain elevators, and plants processing flour, feed, or powder. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group F combustible dust (carbon black, charcoal, coal, and coke dust) and Group G combustible dust (chemicals, flour, grain, plastic, and wood).
Class III, Division 1 & 2 are for hazardous locations where ignitable fibers or flyings are present during normal operations, normally confined, or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class III hazards are commonly found in textile mills, lumber mills, and other plants with airborne fibers or sawdust.

NEC 505/IEC Hazardous Location Classifications

Class I, Zone 1 & 2, Groups IIB+H2, IIA are for hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present during normal operations, are normally confined, or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class I hazards are commonly found in petroleum refineries, fuel dispensaries, sewage treatment plants, and processes using chemicals, paints, coatings, or sealants. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group llB+H2 (ethylene, cyclopropane, ethyl ether, and atmospheres with a hydrogen concentration of 30% or more) and Group llA ((acetone, ammonia, benzene, butane, ethanol, gasoline, hexane, methane, methanol, naphtha, natural gas, propane, and toluene).
Class I, Zone 1, AEx de IIC, T3 are for hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present during normal operations. Class I hazards are commonly found in petroleum refineries, fuel dispensaries, sewage treatment plants, and processes using chemicals, paints, coatings, or sealants. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: AEx de llC (certified American standards per NEC Article 505.9 (C) and Article 506.9 (C) and conforms with both hazardous location requirements and ordinary locations. AEx d devices have housings that contain flames and won't create arcs, sparks, or hot surfaces. AEx e devices have increased safety protections that reduce excessive temperatures and won't produce arcs or sparks. llC devices are suitable for use with acetylene.), and Group T3 (if hazardous gases are present, then the equipment in the area must not have a surface temperature greater than 392°F).
Class I, Zone 2, Group IIC, T3 are for hazardous locations where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors are normally confined or not present in ignitable concentrations. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group llC (acetylene) and Group T3 (if hazardous gases are present, then the equipment in the area must not have a surface temperature greater than 392°F).

Protection Method

Fusible have fuses that blow if the connection experiences an electrical overload or short. They shut off power immediately if there is an electrical malfunction to protect high-current industrial equipment.
Non-Fusible transfer power continuously without interruption. They don't have fuses to protect against electrical overloads or shorts.

NEMA Enclosure Rating

3R is a safety rating for indoor and outdoor electrical enclosures–often called rain-tight or rain-proof–that specifies a degree of protection against incidental contact, against the entry of solid objects (falling dirt, windblown dust) or water (rain, snow), and against exterior ice formation.
4 is a safety rating for indoor and outdoor electrical enclosures with gasketed doors that specifies a degree of protection against incidental contact, against the entry of solid objects (falling dirt, windblown dust) or water (snow, rain, water splashes and sprays), against occasional washdowns, and against exterior ice formation.
4X is a safety rating for indoor and outdoor electrical enclosures – also known as washdown enclosures – that specifies a degree of protection against incidental contact, against the entry of solid objects (falling dirt, windblown dust) or water (rain, snow, water splashes and sprays), against corrosion, and against exterior ice formation.
7 is a safety rating for indoor electrical enclosures that are constructed to keep internal explosions contained when present in hazardous locations.
9 is a safety rating for indoor electrical enclosures that protect against the entry of solid objects (falling dirt, settling dust/lint) that could cause an explosion when present in hazardous locations.
12 is a safety rating for indoor electrical enclosures that specifies a degree of protection against incidental contact and the entry of solid objects (falling dirt, circulating dust/lint) or water (dripping, light splashing).

Includes Neutral Assembly

This indicates that the disconnect switch has an integral neutral assembly that creates a path for safely returning excess electrical current to the source. They protect against electrical shock and prevent shorts that can damage components, circuits, and equipment.

Horsepower @ 240V AC

refers to the maximum horsepower (motor load) at 240 volts which an electrical device can operate. Electrical devices should have an equal or greater HP rating as the equipment they're powering.

Hazardous-location disconnect switches provide control of electrical connections in environments where the possibility of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids, ignitable fibers or flyings, or combustible dust may exist under normal and abnormal conditions. They have location ratings that classify their designated operating environment and must be mated with compatible, hazardous-location devices to be compliant with safety standards. Disconnect switches have manual shutdown mechanisms that open and close circuits to disconnect and connect power from single-load industrial equipment, motors, and electrical operations.
