Hazardous Location Specification

This rating system classifies electrical equipment by which hazardous locations they can safely operate in. Specifically, areas where the possibility of fire or explosion hazards may exist under normal or abnormal conditions because of the presence of flammable, combustible or ignitable gases, vapors, liquids, dust, or fibers/flyings. These ratings are defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC) standards and based on classes, divisions, and groups. Class specifies the type of explosive or ignitable substance present in the atmosphere. Division defines the likelihood of the hazardous material being present in an explosive ignitable concentration. Groups are divisions that describe the type of hazardous material in the atmosphere.

Class I, Div 1 and 2, Group A, B, C, D are for hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present during normal operations, normally confined, or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class I hazards are commonly found in petroleum refineries, fuel dispensaries, sewage treatment plants, and processes using chemicals, paints, coatings, or sealants. This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group A (acetylene), Group B (hydrogen, butadiene, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and acrolein), Group C (ethylene, cyclopropane, and ethyl ether), Group D (acetone, ammonia, benzene, butane, ethanol, gasoline, hexane, methane, methanol, naphtha, natural gas, propane, and toluene).

This rating indicates the electrical device is suitable for use with the following hazardous materials: Group F combustible dust (carbon black, charcoal, coal, and coke dust) and Group G combustible dust (chemicals, flour, grain, plastic, and wood).
Class III, Div 1 and 2 are for hazardous locations where ignitable fibers or flyings are present during normal operations, normally confined, or not present in ignitable concentrations. Class III hazards are commonly found in textile mills, lumber mills, and other plants with airborne fibers or sawdust.
