Surface Grinding Segments
Available40 products
Grinding segments install in vertical-spindle surface grinders to smooth large, flat stock. Multiple segments mount individually in a chuck to create a wheel that has gaps for chip clearance. Sometimes called type 31 wheels, surface grinding segments move across the workpiece as it's mounted to a rotating or reciprocating worktable.
General Purpose Surface Grinding Segments
General purpose grade 53A aluminum oxide surface grinding segments are used on a variety of materials including tool and carbons steels. They maximize coolant flow and chip clearance to limit loading and maintain a cool surface. Grade 53A is a blend of aluminum oxides with a vitrified bond for aggressive surface grinding and stock removal of cast iron, tool steel, and soft and carbon steel.

High-Performance Surface Grinding Segments
High-performance grade 86A aluminum oxide surface-grinding segments are used for precision stock removal of heat-sensitive materials, tool steel, aluminum, hard and soft carbon steels, and stainless steel. A porous vitrified bond maximizes coolant flow to limit loading and maintain a cooler surface than general purpose segments. Grade 86A pink aluminum oxide contains small amounts of chromium oxide to increase abrasive strength over grade 38A white aluminum oxide.

Cool-Cutting Surface Grinding Segments
Cool-cutting surface grinding segments are made of ceramic abrasive in a porous vitrified bond for cutting heat-sensitive materials, titanium, super alloys, and irons. The sharp ceramic abrasive self-sharpens to limit loading and maintain a cool work surface.
