Flex sockets, also known as universal sockets, are for use in loosening and tightening fasteners located in tight spaces. They are hinged in the middle and can rotate and accommodate most angles to ease access to fasteners that can’t be reached with a standard socket. They provide more contact to the fastener head than an open-end wrench and can apply more torque since the enclosed head is less likely to slip off the fastener. These universal joint sockets require a hand drive tool such as a ratchet or breaker bar to turn the socket and rotate the fastener. Drive tools have a square nub called the drive that fits into the same size drive end of the socket for secure attachment to the hand drive tool.
