All-purpose socket sets come with an assortment of sockets, socket bits, drive tools, and wrenches in different sizes and styles for loosening and tightening fasteners. Sockets fit on the outside of the fastener to provide more contact to the fastener than an open-end wrench and can apply more torque since the socket is less likely to slip off the fastener. Drive tools have a square nub called the drive that fits into the same size drive end of the socket or socket bit for secure attachment to the drive tool. Sockets and socket bits require the use of hand drive tools such as a ratchet, breaker bar, or socket bit driver to turn the socket or socket bit and rotate the fastener.
